Program Overview
The UCLA Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP) is a collaborative project between UCLA’s Multicampus Program in Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology (MPGMG) and primary care clinics, community-based organizations and educational institutions in Riverside County. Our partners include: the Riverside University Heath System, the Riverside County Department of Social Services and Public Authority, the Riverside Office on Aging, University of California Riverside School of Medicine, California Baptist University School of Nursing, and the Riverside City College School of Nursing.
The overall goal of our GWEP is to improve health outcomes for older adults in Riverside County through geriatric integration into primary care and health workforce education and training. We are accomplishing this through our three broad initiatives:

Project Initiatives
Initiative 1
Integration of geriatric care management in primary care teaching clinics
Initiative 2
Development and deployment of an interprofessional geriatrics workforce curriculum for trainees and chronic care teams representing the fields of medicine, pharmacy, nursing, social work and other health professions
Initiative 3
Creating a sustainable education program for in-home direct care workers and caregivers, especially those caring for someone with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias; and development and deployment of an interprofessional geriatrics program to enhance community-based services

Funding
The Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP) is funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) is 1 of 44 organizations to receive federal funding. July 2015 marked the beginning of UCLA’s three-year, $2.5 million grant.
